Take the high plan and set aside a little in an HSA account in case you do need a doc. Have HR or your insurance agent explain HSAs if you dont' know.

If you bank the difference into an HSA, you will probably be MUCH MUCH MUCH better off in the long run, with that HDIP.

Unless you are young and unhealthy (like with type one diabetes, or some other condition requiring expensive, ongoing, lifelong treatment), that expensive, comprehensive insurance with low/no deductible is costing you more than you're getting out of it.

It depends.

What's the price difference between the two plans?
Does the company also have an HSA?
Does the employee have the financial ability to pay for medical bills out of pocket until the deductible gets met?

My recommendation, which is not for everyone, is:

1. Take the high deductible plan.
2. With the money you save, open a "health savings account" (HSA).
3. Deduct this money on your taxes.
4. In the unlikely event that you need medical care and cannot afford the high deductible, use the HSA (or part of it) to pay the deductible.
4. If you do not need medical care, hold onto the HSA to use later when you are older and do need medical care.

However, this only works if you save the money. If you are going to blow all the money, and will not have any savings available when you need it, then get a plan without a high deductible.

Yes, there is a good reason to take the more expensive monthly plan if the deductible is lower and until you reach that deductible by out of pocket payments, you get no coverage.

It's only better if they have the knowledge and financial discipline to use an accompanying Health Savings Account with the HDHP. The two are intended to go together.

choose a high deductible if you won't make claims often. like for car insurance, how many time do you wreck your car? most people don't make car claims for years. choose a low deductible if you plan to use the insurance often, like if your animal constantly eats shoelaces and needs surgery every 6 mos.

Your choice of deductible depends on your budget and your preference. A higher deductible will mean a lower monthly premium, but it also means that you will pay a larger portion of the vet bill when your pet needs treatment.

A deductible is either annual, per-incident, or both. With an annual deductible, you must meet that amount each year before the insurance company pays.

Trupanion has a per-incident deductible which must be met once for each separate condition, but once fulfilled for a particular condition, it will never be paid again on that condition for the rest of the pet's life. (This comes in handy with chronic conditions and other ongoing treatments). We also have a $ 0 deductible option and are currently the only company to offer this.

If the deductible is per-incident per year, then you must satisfy the deductible on each separate condition, and then it starts over every calendar year.

Feel free to take a look at the company comparison charts on our website and play around with quotes as we offer flexible deductible options from $ 0 to $ 1000. Good luck!

The deductible you choose will depend on your own financial position. If you are looking for the policy as a way to cover large expenses (cancer, broken bones, surgeries, etc.) and are able to pay for smaller veterinary fees then you may want to choose a higher deductible. A higher deductible will also help lower your premium. If you are wanting the policy to help out with all of your vet bills, a lower deductible would be a better option.

Also, keep in mind that some plans have deductibles that are yearly and some that are per-incident. With a yearly deductible, once you reach that amount - you won't have to pay any more. With a per-incident plan your deductible is applied to each incident.
